Joseph Gallagher Limited (Joseph Gallagher) has announced the completion of the longest connection tunnel on the Thames Tideway Tunnel.

The 249 m connection tunnel at the Falconbrook site, London, UK, is part of a Thames Water pumping station, where on average 700 000 m3 of untreated sewage flows into the River Thames each year. The project involves intercepting these overflows into the new super sewer and reducing this amount by approximately 94%.

The project has showcased the wider technical capabilities of Joseph Gallagher.

The complex formwork designs for the portal were produced in-house, by the Joseph Gallagher Design Team, based in Leeds, UK. NRC Plant Limited provided cranes and excavation equipment and Specialist Plant Limited (SPA), provided specialist tunnelling plant, concrete pumping and ventilation equipment.

Both companies worked together with the project delivery team to pioneer new lifting best practices, including the use of the SUPERCAGE™, the latest innovation designed for the safe movement of large, heavy or high-value goods without the need for complex slinging methods. The SUPERCAGE™ has fully enclosed solid steel sides and high-level crane attachment points which ensured a safe and stable lift for the company’s equipment – not used for lifting the Blue Badger. The Blue Badger Tunnel Excavator was used for the first time in London Clay ground conditions.

Commenting on the flexibility and efficiency of the Blue Badger, Rob Eells, Contract Manager for Joseph Gallagher said: “The connection tunnel is one of the smallest diameter sprayed concrete lining (SCL) tunnels that Joseph Gallagher has undertaken; the Blue Badger offered us maximum safety and precision required in this technically challenging environment.”

The company has received praise from the principal contractor FLO (a joint venture between Ferrovial Construction and Laing O'Rourke) and the client Tideway for the site-setup, COVID-19 mitigation and general housekeeping on the site. The Joseph Gallagher project management team issued 66 best practices awards to the workforce during the project, in recognition of their commitment to the organisations behavioural culture programme, known as LIFE (Living Incident Free Everyday), and the company’s core values: teamwork, respect, integrity, excellence and determination.

Tideway is one of the largest infrastructure projects ever undertaken in the UK water sector and is scheduled for completion in 2025.
